It sits in the Persian Gulf at the far southeast of the country. This area is marshy and wet. It is part of a delta for the Shatt al-Arab river. This river forms where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet. The peninsula is located southeast of the city of Basra. It is near the border with Iran to the northeast. To the southwest, it sits across from Kuwait and its islands.

Life on the peninsula is quiet in many places. Most of the land has very few people or buildings. The town of Al-Faw is the only big town there. It is a place for fishing and shipping. Many residents work in the oil or shipping industries. The area holds two very important oil terminals. These are named Khor al-Amaya and Mina al-Bakr. These terminals help control access to the Shatt al-Arab waterway. This path leads directly to the port of Basra.

This land has a very busy and difficult history. During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, both sides fought for it. In February 1986, Iranian forces launched a surprise attack. They took control of the southernmost tip of the peninsula. This was the first time Iran occupied Iraqi land. Later, in April 1988, the Iraqi Army started a big mission. They called this operation Ramadan Mubarak. They used many troops to push the Iranian forces out. This happened in just 35 hours.

Other wars also changed the peninsula. During the 1991 Gulf War, Allied forces bombed military sites there. This stopped Iraq from using its shipping in the Persian Gulf. In 2003, the peninsula was a target again. British, American, and Polish troops arrived to take the land. They performed a midnight assault from the sea. Their goal was to keep the oil terminals safe. They also wanted to secure the port of Umm Qasr. This helped allow humanitarian goods to reach people.

Today, we can see how much this place matters to the world. The oil terminals like Mina al-Bakr are still key locations. Different groups of soldiers once held these spots. For example, US Navy SEALs seized the Mina al-Bakr terminal. Polish GROM operators took the Khor al-Amaya terminal. Even the security at Camp Driftwood changed hands over time. In March 2007, Iraqi control was handed back to local forces. This land remains a vital link for shipping and oil.
