Bubiyan Island

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bubiyan Island is a very large island in Kuwait. It sits in the north-western part of the Persian Gulf. The island is part of a group of eight islands. It lies near the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab river. This river flows between the lands of Iraq and Iran. Bubiyan is part of a larger area called the Shatt al-Arab delta.

The land of the island is mostly flat. Some coasts are covered in salt marshes. In the middle of the island, there are intermittent wadis. These are dry river beds that only fill with water sometimes. Most of the island is made of low mud flats. During high spring tides, seawater can cover these flats. The island is at risk of being flooded if sea levels rise.

People have visited this island for many centuries. Archaeologists found old pottery pieces on the beach ridges. These pieces are from the Sasanian and early Islamic periods. These times were between 300 AD and 800 AD. In 1991, the island became a military base during the Gulf War. A large oil spill happened in the area during that time. A bridge was also damaged but was rebuilt in 1999.

Nature is very important on Bubiyan Island. The Mubarak al-Kabeer reserve is a special wetland area. It covers 50,948 hectares of land. This area has small lagoons and shallow salt marshes. It is a very important stop for migrating birds. Some birds fly from Turkey to India. Others fly from Eurasia to Africa. The island has the world's largest breeding colony of crab-plover birds.

Today, many big projects are happening on the island. Workers are building the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port. This port is part of a project called the Silk City. In September 2020, the port was 53% complete. The island will also have power plants and substations. A 5,000-megawatt power plant is already built in nearby Subiya. A long concrete bridge connects the island to the mainland. This bridge was opened in February 1983.
