Bubiyan Island

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bubiyan is the largest island in Kuwait. It sits in the Persian Gulf. The island is part of a group of eight islands. It sits near the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab river. This river flows between Iraq and Iran.

The island is mostly flat. It has salt marshes and mud flats. Some parts of the island have wadis. These are dry river beds that fill with water sometimes. The sea can cover the mud flats during high tides. The island may face more water if sea levels rise.

Many birds visit this place. They fly on long paths from Turkey to India. They also fly from Eurasia to Africa. The island has the world's largest group of crab-plover birds. The sea around the island is also a nursery for fish.

People have lived here for a long time. Old pieces of pottery were found on the beaches. These pieces are from many hundreds of years ago. Today, people are building the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port. This port will help the area grow. They also plan to build power plants there to make electricity.
