It sits in the Persian Gulf. The land is in the far southeast of Iraq. It is near the big city of Basra. This land is wet and marshy. It is part of a delta. A delta is where a river meets the sea. The Shatt al-Arab river flows through this area.

A small town sits on the peninsula. It is called Al-Faw. Most people there work in fishing. Others work in oil or shipping. The land has big oil terminals. These help move oil by sea. Because of this, the place is very important. It helps control the way to the port of Basra.

This place has seen many wars. In the 1980s, Iran and Iraq fought for it. In 2003, many troops arrived to take the land. They wanted to keep the oil safe. They also wanted to help goods reach the port of Umm Qasr. This helped people get food and supplies.
