The name Kuwait comes from an Arabic word. It means a "fortress built near water." This name fits well because of its location near the sea.

Most people in the country live in the capital, Kuwait City. This city is a large urban area where many people gather.

The total population is about 4.82 million people. Only 1.53 million of these people are Kuwaiti citizens. The rest, about 3.29 million, are from over 100 other countries. This makes Kuwait a very diverse place to live. In 2024, it had the seventh largest number of foreign nationals as a percentage of its population.

History in this region goes back a very long time. People have lived here since the Mesolithic era, around 8000 BC.
