It sits 20 km away from Kuwait City. The island is also 50 km southeast of where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers meet the sea. For a very long time, this island was a prize for anyone wanting to control trade. Because of its location, people have lived on it for thousands of years. It was the longest place in Kuwait to have people living there without stopping. Some people think its name comes from an ancient Greek word for "outpost."

Many different groups of people have lived on the island over time. Around 2000 BC, Mesopotamians first settled the land. They built many buildings that looked like the ones in Iraq. Later, the island was part of the Dilmun civilization. During that time, it was known as "Agarum." It was a busy hub for trade and business.

People used the island to move goods up and down the Persian Gulf. This made the island a very important center for many ancient cultures.

History shows that many powerful empires wanted to rule Failaka. The Babylonians controlled the island and even had kings there. King Nebuchadnezzar II had a palace and a temple on the island. Later, the ancient Greeks arrived. Alexander the Great is said to have named the island "Ikaros." He chose this name because it looked like an island in the Aegean Sea.

The Greeks built a large fort and two temples there. They even had a temple for the goddess Artemis.

After the Greeks, other groups like the Christians lived on the island. From the 5th century until the 9th century, Christian settlements flourished. Archaeologists found small farms, villages, and two large churches.

In more recent times, the island had over two thousand residents. However, things changed during the Gulf War in 1990. The Iraqi military moved the residents to the mainland. They used the buildings for target practice and placed mines on the beaches.
