He was a high-ranking military officer. He was also part of a powerful family. Saddam Hussein was his cousin and his brother-in-law. Adnan held many different titles in the government. He was a member of the Revolutionary Command Council. This group made the most important decisions for the country. He also served as the Minister of Defence for ten years. He was a very central figure in Iraqi life.

Adnan worked hard to change the Iraqi military. He was the Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. This made him the second most powerful person in the military. He helped rebuild and modernize the army. He traveled to meet many different Iraqi people. He made friends with people from all different backgrounds. He even knew a Jewish doctor named Eliyahu who served in the army. He used his role to connect with many citizens.

Adnan's life in politics began many years ago. He joined the Ba'ath Party in 1956. He was arrested in 1959 after a failed plan by the party. Later, he helped the party take power in 1963 and 1968. He was born in Tikrit in 1940. His father was Khairallah Talfah, an officer in the Iraqi Army. Adnan studied at the Baghdad Military College. He also earned a law degree from Baghdad University in 1975. He loved to take photos starting at age fourteen.

There was a hard time for the family in 1988. Saddam's son, Uday, was arrested after a serious incident. This caused a big rift, or a break, in the family. Adnan's sister, Sajida, asked him for help. Because of this, Adnan disappeared from public view for a while. Some people thought he might try to take power himself. He later appeared in a video near Basra. He was on a fishing holiday with Saddam and Sajida.

Adnan died in a helicopter crash in May 1989.
