Abdul Salam Arif was a famous military officer and a leader in Iraq. He lived from March 21, 1921, until April 13, 1966. Arif was a very important person in Iraqi history. He helped change how the country was run. He was a member of a secret group called the Free Officers of Iraq. This group wanted to change the government. In 1958, he helped lead a big event called a coup. This event ended the Hashemite monarchy in Iraq.

Arif and another leader named Abdel Karim Qasim did not agree on many things. Arif was a pan-Arabist. This means he wanted Arab lands to work together as one. He wanted Iraq to join the United Arab Republic with Egypt and Syria. Qasim was an Iraqi nationalist. He wanted Iraq to stay separate. Because they disagreed, they had a power struggle. Qasim won the struggle in September 1958. Arif lost his high jobs and was sent to a low post. He later returned to Baghdad and was arrested for plotting against the state.

Things changed again in February 1963. A group of people overthrew Qasim. Arif was chosen as a leader during this time. Because many people liked him, he was elected the second president of Iraq. This was a very big moment for him. He had been in trouble before, but now he was in charge. During this time, he also dealt with people who tried to take his power. In 1964, he arrested a man named Saddam Hussein after a failed plot.

As president, Arif worked hard to build his country. He focused on developing the infrastructure of Iraq. Infrastructure includes things like roads and buildings that a country needs to work well. He also wanted to bring Iraq closer to Egypt. He created the Arab Socialist Union of Iraq in 1964. He also made banks and thirty big businesses belong to the state. He hoped these steps would help create unity among Arab nations.

Arif's time as leader came to an end in a sad way. On April 13, 1966, he died in a plane crash. The plane was a de Havilland Dove. It crashed in southern Iraq near Basra Airport. Some reports said it was a helicopter accident. After he died, his brother Abdul Rahman Arif became the new president. There was a short struggle to see who would lead next. This showed how much the leadership in Iraq was changing during those years.
