He was part of a group called the Free Officers. In 1958, he helped lead a coup. A coup is when a group takes control of a government. This changed Iraq from a kingdom to a republic.

Arif and another leader named Qasim did not agree on many things. Arif wanted Iraq to join with Egypt and Syria. This idea is called pan-Arabism. Qasim wanted Iraq to be separate. Because of this fight, Arif lost his job. He was even sent to jail. Later, he was released.

In 1963, Arif became the president of Iraq. He wanted to build many things in his land. He worked on the country's infrastructure. Infrastructure means the roads and buildings a country needs. He also made many big businesses belong to the state. This was to help bring Arab lands together. In 1964, he arrested a man named Saddam Hussein. Arif died in a plane crash in 1966. His brother, Abdul Rahman, became the next president.
