The Iran–Iraq War was a very long and serious conflict between two neighbors.

It began in September 1980 when Iraq invaded Iran. This war lasted for eight years and changed much for both nations. It was a very deadly war for regular armies. About 500,000 people died during the fighting.

Many people also suffered from attacks on their cities. The war finally ended with a peace deal in August 1988. This deal was a ceasefire helped by the United Nations.

Several big reasons caused the fighting to start.

1975 Algiers Agreement

First, the two lands argued over a river called the Shatt al-Arab. Iraq wanted to take back land it had given to Iran years before. Second, the Iraqi leader, President Saddam Hussein, wanted more power. He wanted to be the main leader in the Persian Gulf area. Third, Iraq was worried about the new ideas in Iran. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran's new leader was Ruhollah Khomeini. Iraq feared these new ideas would spread to its own people.

At the start, the war moved in different ways.

Iraq expected to win the war very quickly. They thought Iran's military was weak after its recent revolution. Iraq's invasion stalled by December 1980. Then, the Iranian military began to gain strength. By June 1982, Iran had won back all its land. After that, Iran started its own offensive into Iraq. This created a five-year period where neither side could easily win. This part of the war involved large trenches and very hard fighting.

Many different countries helped the two sides during the war.

Iraq received help from many places. These included the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union. France, Italy, and most Arab countries also helped Iraq. Iran had its own group of helpers. Syria, Libya, North Korea, and China provided aid to Iran. Even Pakistan and Cuba helped the Iranian side. This made the war a very large event for the whole world to watch.

In the end, the war changed very little about the map.

The borders between Iran and Iraq stayed the same. Neither country received money to pay for the damage they caused. Both nations lost a huge amount of money during the eight years. The fighting between the two lands did not truly stop for a long time. It only improved much later after Saddam Hussein was removed from power in 2003. This history shows how long and difficult a war can be for everyone involved.
