The Iranian Revolution was a massive change in how Iran was ruled. In 1979, the people overthrew the Pahlavi dynasty to start a new government. This old system was a monarchy, where a king called the Shah held power. The revolution changed the country into the Islamic Republic of Iran. A religious leader named Ruhollah Khomeini became the new leader of the nation. This event was very important because it changed Iran's relationship with the rest of the world.

Many things led to this big moment over many years. In 1953, a coup helped the Shah gain more control over the country. A coup is when a group takes over a government by force. This event made the United States have more influence in Iran. Later, in 1963, the Shah started the White Revolution to modernize the land. These changes made many religious groups feel left out or unhappy. Because of this, Ruhollah Khomeini became a loud critic of the Shah.

Protests grew larger and more intense as time went on. In October 1977, people began to hold large demonstrations in the streets. Different groups joined together, including socialists and religious people. In August 1978, a very sad fire happened at the Cinema Rex. About 400 people died in that fire. Many people believed the Shah's secret police caused it to stop the protests. This caused even more anger and made the protests spread everywhere.

By the start of 1979, the government was starting to fail. On January 16, 1979, the Shah left Iran to live in exile. He left his duties to a council and a prime minister named Shapour Bakhtiar. Then, on February 1, 1979, Khomeini returned to the city of Tehran. Millions of people were in the streets to greet him. By February 11, the monarchy was officially over. Khomeini took charge as the new leader of the country.

After the revolution, Iran became a very different place. In March 1979, a vote called a referendum was held. About 98% of the people voted to become an Islamic republic. This led to a new constitution for the nation. Khomeini became the supreme leader in December 1979. The new government wanted to focus more on Islamic ideas. This changed how Iran interacted with other countries for a long time.
