The Iranian Revolution, also known as the Islamic Revolution, was a massive political transformation. In 1979, it replaced the Pahlavi dynasty with the Islamic Republic of Iran. This event ended Iran's long history of monarchy. The monarchical government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was superseded by Ruhollah Khomeini. Khomeini was an Islamist cleric who led one of the rebel factions. This revolution changed Iran's relationship with the world. It shifted the nation from a pro-Western secular monarchy to an anti-Western Islamic republic.

The revolution was driven by many deep-seated tensions. Many Iranians felt the Shah's regime was corrupt and repressive. People believed the government was too reliant on foreign powers. Specifically, many felt the United States and United Kingdom had too much influence. This perceived loss of sovereignty hurt Iran's cultural identity. Economic issues also played a major role. While there was relative prosperity, there were also economic bottlenecks and inflation. An ambitious economic program and a sudden contraction in 1977–1978 caused widespread anger.

History shows that resistance to foreign influence and monarchy existed long before 1979. In 1891, the Tobacco Protest saw the Shi'a clergy influence society. This happened after the Shah granted a tobacco monopoly to a British major. This monopoly threatened the livelihoods of 200,000 people. Later, the Constitutional Revolution of 1905–1911 established a parliament called the Majlis. In 1921, General Reza Khan seized power in a coup. He founded the Pahlavi dynasty as Reza Shah. His secular reforms, such as banning traditional Islamic clothing, caused significant public discontent.

A critical turning point occurred in 1953. In that year, a coup d'état backed by the CIA and MI6 took place. This coup overthrew Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. Mossadegh had nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company to reclaim petroleum reserves. The coup reinstated Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as an absolute monarch. This event significantly increased United States influence over Iran. In 1963, the Shah launched the White Revolution. This was a modernization and land reform program. However, it alienated many people, especially the clergy.

The movement grew through several intense stages of protest. In October 1977, anti-government demonstrations began to spread. These protests involved communists, socialists, and Islamists. A major turning point happened in August 1978. A fire at the Cinema Rex killed approximately 400 people. Many citizens believed the Shah's secret police, SAVAK, caused the fire. They thought it was a false flag operation to justify a crackdown. This belief fueled nationwide outrage and mobilization. By the end of 1978, the uprising had paralyzed the entire country.

The final collapse of the monarchy happened very quickly in early 1979. On January 16, 1979, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi left Iran for exile. He left his duties to a Regency Council and Prime Minister Shapour Bakhtiar. On February 1, 1979, Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Tehran. Several million people greeted him upon his arrival. By February 11, the monarchy was officially overthrown. Rebel troops and guerrillas overwhelmed the Pahlavi loyalists in combat.

Following the takeover, the new government established a new system. In March 1979, a referendum was held to decide the nation's future. About 98% of the voters approved the shift to an Islamic republic. This led to the drafting of a new constitution. In December 1979, Khomeini became the supreme leader. The new government was based on the concept of Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist. This system sits between authoritarianism and totalitarianism.

The revolution had lasting effects on regional politics. Post-revolutionary Iran aimed to support Shi'ite political ascendancy. It sought to undermine the influence of Sunni leaders in the region. The new government also declared the destruction of Israel as a core objective. This caused a massive exile of people, creating a large Iranian diaspora. The revolution remains a profound example of how religious and nationalist goals can merge to change a nation's entire structure.
