This offensive led to the fall of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It also ended the War in Afghanistan, which had lasted nearly 20 years. The Taliban victory changed things for many people inside the country and around the world. Many people were worried about human rights and the spread of terrorism. This event marked the start of the Taliban taking control of the nation again.

The Taliban used several ways to gain power during this time. They moved through the countryside to take over many local areas. They also used social media to help with their plans. Many local leaders and governors chose to join the Taliban instead of the government. Some of these leaders made deals to switch sides. The Taliban also had help from other militant groups like al-Qaeda. These groups fought alongside them during the offensive. This made their move across the land much stronger.

The offensive began on May 1, 2021. This date was important because the United States began pulling its troops out. The U.S. was moving 2,500 troops away from the country. Other international allies also began to leave. In the first three months, the Taliban grew very fast. They went from controlling 73 districts to controlling 223 districts. By June, many other countries like Sweden and Spain had also withdrawn their forces. The speed of this change surprised many governments, including Russia and the United States.

Many hard problems helped the Taliban succeed. The Afghan National Security Forces lost important support from the United States. They lost access to special software and help from planes in the sky. Some soldiers also did not receive their pay on time. This made it very hard for the army to keep fighting. Even though many people tried to help, such as armed civilians and former warlords, the government struggled. President Ashraf Ghani found it difficult to bring all the different local leaders together.

By August, the situation reached its peak. The Taliban launched attacks on the big provincial capital cities. On August 13, they won battles in the cities of Herat, Kandahar, and Lashkargah. On August 15, President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. This allowed the Taliban to capture the capital city, Kabul.
