Afghanistan has had many hard years.
Fighting happened in many places. Different groups fought for control. This made life very hard for people. Many people worked to find peace. Can you imagine living through such changes?
Long ago, Afghanistan was very peaceful. A king ruled the land for many years.
Then, things began to change. Different groups started to fight for control. This led to many years of war.
One group called the Taliban took over much of the land. Later, other countries came to help.
Fighting continued for a long time. Many people worked to make things better.
In 2021, the fighting changed again. The land has seen many big shifts.
It is a place with a very long story.
Afghanistan has seen many years of fighting. For a long time, the land was peaceful under King Zahir Shah.
In 1973, his cousin took control. This ended the peaceful time.
In 1978, a new group took power. This led to a war with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union stayed in the country until 1989. After they left, different groups kept fighting each other.
By 1996, a group called the Taliban took control of most of the land.
They ruled for a few years. Then, in 2001, the United States and other nations joined the fight. They wanted to stop the Taliban. This started a war that lasted twenty years.
In 2021, the United States and its allies left the country. The Taliban took control once again.
Even now, some groups still fight in parts of the land. Many people have been hurt during these long years of war. The story of Afghanistan continues to change.
Afghanistan has a long history of many different leaders and groups. For forty years, the country was quite peaceful under King Mohammad Zahir Shah.
This calm period ended in 1973 when his cousin, Mohammad Daoud Khan, took power. Khan ended the monarchy and started the Republic of Afghanistan. This change brought new types of unrest to the land. Soon, the country faced many hard times and shifts in leadership.
In 1978, a group called the PDPA held a revolution. This event is known as the Saur Revolution. It replaced Khan's government with a new socialist state. The new leaders wanted to make big changes to how society worked. These changes often went against the traditions of people living in rural areas. Because of this disagreement, the Soviet Union sent its military into Afghanistan in 1979. This started the Soviet-Afghan War, which lasted until 1989.
After the Soviet Union left, the fighting did not stop. Different groups of fighters, called the mujahideen, continued to clash with the government. By 1992, the old government collapsed after the Battle of Kabul. However, the mujahideen groups could not agree on how to share power. This led to a multi-sided civil war between them. In 1996, a group called the Taliban took control of Kabul.
They soon controlled about 90% of the country. A group called the Northern Alliance continued to resist them in the north.
Things changed again after the September 11 attacks in 2001. The Taliban had given a place to live to Osama bin Laden. The United States demanded he be handed over, but the Taliban refused. This led to an American-led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001.
The invasion helped topple the Taliban and set up a new government. This began a very long war that lasted for twenty years. During this time, NATO and other countries worked with the new Afghan government.
Eventually, the United States and its allies decided to leave. They began to withdraw their troops in 2020 and finished in 2021. During a large offensive, the Taliban took control of the country once more.
This brought back the Islamic Emirate. Even though the big war ended, some fighting still happens in certain areas. These clashes involve different groups like the ISIS-Taliban and others. Many people have been affected by these many years of conflict.
The Afghan conflict refers to a series of continuous armed struggles in Afghanistan. These events have shaped the nation since the 1970s. The conflict involves changing governments, foreign military interventions, and various internal groups. This history is marked by shifts between monarchy, republics, and different Islamic states. Understanding this period requires looking at how different political ideas and foreign powers interacted over many decades.
Before the instability, Afghanistan was a stable monarchy. King Mohammad Zahir Shah ruled for 40 years from 1933 to 1973. This period was relatively peaceful for the country. In 1973, a coup d'état occurred. This was a non-violent takeover by the King's cousin, Mohammad Daoud Khan. Khan ended the monarchy and established the Republic of Afghanistan. This transition ended a long era of stability and introduced new political tensions.
Instability increased after the Saur Revolution in 1978. During this event, the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) violently overthrew Khan's government. The PDPA established the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. This was a socialist state that aligned closely with the Soviet Union. The PDPA attempted radical reforms in land and social structures. These reforms often clashed with the traditional customs of rural populations. This disagreement led to widespread unrest and uprisings.
To support the PDPA, the Soviet Union launched a military intervention in 1979. This began the Soviet-Afghan War, which lasted until 1989.
During this war, the Soviet-Afghan alliance fought against the mujahideen. The mujahideen were various anti-Soviet groups. They received significant support through a covert effort called Operation Cyclone. This operation provided aid from the United States, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.
When the Soviet Union withdrew in 1989, the fighting did not end.
After the Soviet withdrawal, a period of intense civil war followed. The PDPA government collapsed in 1992 following the Peshawar Accord. However, different mujahideen factions could not agree on a power-sharing coalition. This disagreement triggered a multi-sided civil war between these groups.
By 1996, the Taliban had seized the capital, Kabul. They also controlled approximately 90% of the country.
A group known as the Northern Alliance resisted them from northern Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance held international recognition at the United Nations.
The conflict entered a new phase after the September 11 attacks in 2001. The Taliban had provided political asylum to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The United States demanded his extradition, but the Taliban refused. This led to an American-led invasion in October 2001.
This invasion toppled the Taliban's Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. It led to the installation of the Afghan Transitional Authority in 2002. This began the War in Afghanistan, a conflict that lasted for 20 years.
During the 20-year war, NATO and allied forces fought alongside the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. They worked to combat a persistent Taliban insurgency.
The war involved many different groups, including the Haqqani network and the Islamic State–Khorasan Province. In 2011, U.S. SEAL Team Six killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Despite this, the insurgency continued. Eventually, the United States and NATO began a withdrawal process in 2020. This concluded in 2021 following bilateral negotiations.
The end of the major war in 2021 saw a major shift in power. A Taliban offensive led to the fall of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. This resulted in the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate.
Although the large-scale war ended, some unrest remains. Clashes continue between the Taliban and groups like the ISIS-Taliban or the National Resistance Front. The human cost of these decades of conflict has been immense. Estimates suggest between 1,405,111 and 2,084,468 people were killed during these various stages of the Afghan conflict.
