Omar gave him the name "Baradar," which means "brother." This name shows how close their friendship was. During the first time the Taliban ruled from 1996 to 2001, Baradar held many jobs. He served as a governor and a military commander in different areas. He even held the role of Deputy Minister of Defense.

He became a de facto leader, which means he was the person actually in charge. In 2010, he was arrested by officials in Pakistan. Some people believe he was arrested because he was secretly talking about peace. He stayed in prison for eight years. The United States eventually asked for him to be released.
