After his father died in 1933, Khan was raised by his uncle. He studied politics in France and worked in many different places. He served as a governor for several provinces in Afghanistan. Later, he became a military officer and a general. These roles helped him become a very well-known person in his country.

Khan served as prime minister for ten years starting in 1953. He was chosen by his cousin, King Mohammad Zahir Shah. During this time, he worked on many big projects. He helped finish the Helmand Valley project to help people live better lives. He also helped women gain more freedom and better schools. However, his choices in foreign policy caused some hard times. He had a close trading relationship with the Soviet Union. This made relations with neighboring Pakistan very tense.

Relations with Pakistan became difficult because of disagreements about borders. Khan wanted to bring Pashtun people together, which upset the new nation of Pakistan. In 1960 and 1961, Afghan troops tried to move into areas near the border. These attempts did not work well for Khan. Pakistan used jets to fight back, and the Afghan army lost many people. Because of these fights, Pakistan closed its borders with Afghanistan. This caused an economic crisis for the country.

In 1973, Khan decided to change how Afghanistan was run. He led a coup to remove the King from power. A coup is when a group takes control of a government. This event was bloodless and had the support of many army officers. Instead of being a King, Khan became the first president of the Republic of Afghanistan. He set up a system where his own party held the power. This was called an autocratic system. He also worked to make the country less dependent on the Soviet Union.

Even with these changes, many people were unhappy with his rule. Some wanted more political parties, while others did not like his close ties to certain groups. In 1978, a new group called the PDPA led another coup. This group took power from Khan, and he was killed during the event.
