Mohammad Zahir Shah was the last king of Afghanistan. He ruled for nearly 40 years, starting in 1933. This was a very long time for a leader in his country. He was the longest-serving ruler since the Durrani Empire began in the 1700s. His time as king was known as a period of peace. Many people remember his reign as a calm era before later conflicts.

Zahir Shah worked to make his country more modern. In the 1950s, he began many new projects. He helped build the first modern university in Afghanistan. He also worked to build ties with many different nations. He even asked for help from both the United States and the Soviet Union. This was rare because those two countries were rivals during the Cold War. He wanted to keep his country independent from any single power.

Zahir Shah had a very international education. He went to schools in Kabul like Habibia High School. He also studied in France at the University of Montpellier. This training helped him when he returned to Afghanistan. He helped his family restore order when the country was in trouble. He served in several government roles before becoming king. He was the son of Mohammad Nadir Shah.

In 1964, Zahir Shah helped create a new constitution. This was a set of important rules for the country. It changed Afghanistan into a modern democratic state. The new rules allowed for free elections and a parliament. It also gave women the right to vote. This was a big step for civil and political rights. He was seen as a kind leader who did not use executions for politics.

In 1973, a change in power happened while he was in Italy. His cousin, Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan, took control in a coup. This ended over 225 years of kings ruling Afghanistan. Zahir Shah lived in exile near Rome for 29 years. He spent his time in a villa near the city. He enjoyed playing golf, chess, and gardening. He finally returned to Afghanistan in 2002 after the Taliban rule ended. People called him the Father of the Nation.
