He wrote books about the hard lives of workers. His writing was even translated into the Russian language.

Taraki spent many years working to change his country. He helped start a political party called the PDPA. In 1965, he was elected as the party's General Secretary. He also tried to run for a seat in parliament. He started a newspaper called Khalq to share his ideas. However, the government closed the paper after only one month. In 1978, Taraki and other leaders started the Saur Revolution. This event changed the government of Afghanistan completely. The country was given a new name: the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

As the new leader, Taraki faced many hard jobs. His government was split into two different groups. One group was called the Khalqists, and Taraki led them. The other group was the Parchamites, led by Babrak Karmal. Taraki began a purge to remove the Parchamite members. Some were sent to work as ambassadors in other lands. Others were sent to jail within the country. This caused a lot of trouble and sadness for many people. His rule was also marked by a cult of personality. People began to call him the "Great Leader" and "Great Teacher."

Taraki also tried to change how land was owned. On January 1, 1979, he started a new land reform. The government took land from large owners to give to others. They said they moved 665,000 hectares of land. They believed this would make the rural people happy. Instead, the plan did not work well at all. Food harvests fell quickly, and many Afghans became very angry. Taraki had to stop the policy because people were so unhappy. This made the situation in the country even more difficult.

Internal fights eventually led to the end of his rule. Taraki had a close helper named Hafizullah Amin. Over time, the relationship between the two men turned sour. Amin actually helped lead many of the harsh policies. On September 14, 1979, Taraki was removed from his power. He was killed on October 8, 1979, on Amin's orders. The newspapers in Kabul said he died from an illness. His death was a major reason why the Soviet Union later moved into Afghanistan. This was a very big change for the whole region.
