He served as the first supreme leader of the country from 1996 to 2001. He was also the founder of a group known as the Taliban. This group grew from a small number of students into a force that ruled much of the land. People remember him for how he changed the rules of Afghan life. His leadership shaped how the country worked for many years.

Omar's life changed through many different stages. He grew up in a poor Pashtun family in Kandahar. His father was a religious teacher who taught the Quran. After his father died, Omar was raised by his uncles. He studied at religious schools called madrasas. These schools are often found near village mosques. He spent much of his early life focusing on his religious studies.

War played a big part in his history. In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Omar joined a group of fighters called the mujahideen to fight back. He was an expert at using rocket-propelled grenades against tanks. During the fighting, he was wounded four times. An explosion caused him to lose his right eye.

The Soviet Union eventually left the country in 1989.

After the Soviets left, the country fell into a period of chaos. Many different groups fought for control during the Second Afghan Civil War. In 1994, Omar started the Taliban movement with fewer than 50 armed students. He wanted to stop the fighting and the bad actions of local warlords. By the end of 1994, his group grew to 12,000 people.

By 1996, the Taliban took control of most of Afghanistan.

As leader, Omar enforced very strict religious rules. The Taliban government was called the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. They banned women from most jobs and schools. Omar even ordered the destruction of the famous Buddhas of Bamiyan.

After the September 11 attacks in 2001, the United States invaded Afghanistan. This led to the Taliban losing power. Omar went into hiding to avoid capture. He lived in secret until he died from tuberculosis in 2013.
