Akhtar Mansur was a very important leader for a group called the Taliban. This group lived and worked in the country of Afghanistan. Mansur was born around 1968 in southern Afghanistan. He was born in either a village named Kariz or Band-i-Taimoor. Both of these places are in the Maiwand District of Kandahar Province.

Some people say he belonged to the Alizai tribe. Other sources say he was part of the Ishaqzai tribe. Both of these tribes are part of the Durrani line of Pashtuns. He went to a village mosque and started school when he was seven years old.

As a young man, Mansur was a soldier in a war. In 1985, he fought against the Soviet military in Afghanistan. He was part of a group called the Mohammad Nabi Mohammadi group. During this time, he fought in many places like Maiwand and Panjwai. In 1987, he was injured in the Panjwai district. He received 13 separate wounds during that time.

After the war, he went to study religion in different schools. He spent time in a refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan. He studied at a place called Darul Uloom Haqqania. Many people remember him as a popular student there.

Later, Mansur held several big jobs within the Taliban government. When they took the Kandahar airport, he was the security officer in charge. This job meant he looked after the air force and air-defense systems. In 1996, he also became the director of Ariana airlines. He was also a minister for aviation and tourism.

He helped organize 24-hour flights for people in Afghanistan. These flights helped Muslims travel to Mecca for Hajj. In 1997, he was even captured by a warlord for two months. He was later released through a prisoner swap.

After many years, Mansur became the second supreme leader of the Taliban. He was elected to this top role on July 29, 2015. He took over after the founding leader, Mullah Omar. Some people in the group did not agree with this choice. They thought the decision was not fair to everyone.

Some members wanted Mullah Omar's son, Yaqoob, to be the leader instead. There was also some disagreement about when Mullah Omar had died. Mansur worked to keep the group together during this time. He even wrote a letter to a leader named Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi about unity.

Mansur's time as the top leader did not last very long. He led the group for about one year. In 2016, he died during a drone strike by the United States. This strike happened in Balochistan, which is in Pakistan.

President Barack Obama said Mansur was killed because of plans for attacks. Obama hoped that Mansur's death would help start a peace process. This event changed how the Taliban functioned. It was a major moment in the history of the region.
