Ayman al-Zawahiri was a man who lived two very different lives. He was born on June 19, 1951, in Giza, Egypt. He came from a very famous and wealthy family. His father, Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri, was a surgeon and a professor. His mother, Umayma Azzam, came from a family of scholars and leaders.

Because of his family, he was connected to many important people. This background gave him a strong interest in religion and politics from a young age.

As a student, Ayman was very hardworking and studious. He loved reading poetry and was very good in school. He went to Cairo University to study medicine. He graduated in 1974 and later earned a master's degree in surgery.

For a few years, he worked as a surgeon in the Egyptian Army. He also opened his own medical clinic. He could speak three languages: Arabic, English, and French.

However, Ayman also became part of a secret group. By age 15, he helped form a small cell of students. They wanted to change the Egyptian government and create an Islamist state. This group eventually became known as the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.

He was arrested and sent to prison from 1981 to 1984. Later, he was involved in many other plans against the government. He was also wanted by the United Nations for his role in several bombings.

Eventually, Ayman joined a much larger group called al-Qaeda. He became a very close partner to the leader, Osama bin Laden.

He helped plan the September 11 attacks in the United States. In 2001, he merged his own group with al-Qaeda. By 2004, he was the official deputy to bin Laden. After bin Laden died in 2011, Ayman became the new leader of al-Qaeda. The United States even offered a $25 million reward to find him.

His life ended in 2022. On July 31, 2022, he was killed in Afghanistan during a drone strike by the CIA.

His story shows how a person can move from being a doctor to a leader of a militant group. It is a history that changed how many countries work together to stay safe. His actions had a huge impact on the world for many years.
