Al-Qaeda is a militant group that many countries call a terrorist organization. Its name comes from an Arabic word. It means "the base" or "the foundation."

The group has many members from different places. While many members are Arabs, others come from many ethnic groups. This includes people from North Africa, Jordan, and Iraq. Some members even come from non-Arab backgrounds. These include people from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Turkey.

The group has a specific set of goals for the world. They want to create a large Islamic state. This state would use sharia law to rule. Sharia is a type of Islamic law.

They want to remove foreign and secular influences from Muslim lands. They believe these outside influences are corrupt. The group also wants to unite the Muslim world under one single government. They believe a group of dedicated fighters should lead this change. This idea is often called a "vanguard."

Al-Qaeda began in 1988 during meetings in Peshawar.

Several people helped start the group. These included Abdullah Yusuf Azzam and Osama bin Laden. Other founders were Mohammed Atef and Ayman al-Zawahiri. They were all veterans of the Soviet-Afghan War. Bin Laden later offered to send fighters to help Saudi Arabia in 1990. However, the Saudi government chose to work with the United States instead. This choice led bin Laden to declare a fight against the U.S. and Saudi rulers.

Over many years, the group carried out several major attacks. In 1998, they bombed U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. This event killed 224 people.

They also attacked the USS Cole. These events caused big changes in how countries work together. They also changed global markets and caused health problems for people living nearby.

Many countries have worked to stop the group's actions. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan to remove the Taliban and find Al-Qaeda.

In May 2011, the U.S. military killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. After him, Ayman al-Zawahiri became the leader. The U.S. killed Al-Zawahiri in 2022. Today, the group is not one single unit. It has split into many smaller regional groups. These groups work in places like the Middle East and South Asia.
