In 1997, ElBaradei became the Director General of the IAEA. He took over the job from Hans Blix of Sweden. He led the agency for twelve years until 2009. During this time, he worked to stop nuclear weapons from spreading. He led teams to inspect nuclear sites in places like Iraq and Sudan. He also dealt with tensions regarding nuclear programs in North Korea and Iran. In 2005, he and the IAEA won the Nobel Peace Prize. This award was for their work to keep nuclear energy peaceful.

His leadership often led to difficult debates with powerful nations. For example, he led inspections in Iraq before the 2003 invasion. He told the UN that some documents about Iraq's uranium were not real. He also disagreed with the United States about Iran's nuclear program. Some leaders in the U.S. and Europe criticized his actions. In 2005, the United States even tried to stop his third term. However, many other countries like China, Russia, and France supported him. He was eventually re-elected unanimously by the IAEA board in June 2005.
