He eventually became the head of the engineering department there. While he was a professor, he also became involved with a group called the Muslim Brotherhood. This group was not allowed to hold office during the time of President Hosni Mubarak. Morsi ran for parliament as an independent candidate in the year 2000.

Politics changed for Morsi after the Egyptian Revolution in 2011. This revolution led to the resignation of President Mubarak. Morsi became the leader of the Freedom and Justice Party. This party was the largest in the 2011–12 parliamentary elections. In the 2012 presidential election, Morsi won the vote. He won with 51.73 percent of the votes. On June 30, 2012, he became the fifth president of Egypt. This was the first time an Egyptian president was chosen by a democratic vote.

His time as president was marked by many disagreements. In November 2012, Morsi issued a new set of rules. These rules gave him a lot of power to make laws. Some people felt these rules were unfair to the courts. This led to many protests in the streets of Egypt. In June 2013, even more people protested for him to leave office.

The military stepped in and removed him from power. This event is known as a coup d'état. The military appointed Adly Mansour as the interim president.

After he was removed, Morsi faced many legal problems. He was sent to prison and faced several charges. In 2015, a court sentenced him to death. However, this sentence was later overturned in November 2016. A new trial was ordered for him. Morsi died on June 17, 2019, while he was still in custody. Some people claimed he did not receive the medical care he needed. His life remains a major part of Egypt's recent history.
