Egypt uses a system of government called a semi-presidential republic. This means the country has a president who holds a lot of power. The president is the head of state and the leader of the military. Currently, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi holds this position. He was first elected in the year 2014.

In 2019, the rules for how long a president stays in office changed. Before this, a president could serve four-year terms. Now, the terms are six years long. This change allowed President el-Sisi to remain in power until the year 2030.

The law-making part of the government is called the Parliament. It is the oldest legislative group in Africa and the Middle East. Today, the Parliament is bicameral, which means it has two separate houses. The first house is the House of Representatives. It is the main group for making laws. It can have up to 596 members. Some are elected by the people, and others are chosen by the President.

The second house is the Senate. The Senate was first created in 1980 and brought back in 2019. It has 264 members. The House of Representatives has the power to impeach the President. This means they can vote to remove him from office.

Egypt has a long history of changing its leaders and rules. The position of president was first made after the revolution in 1952. Mohammed Naguib was the very first person to hold the job. For a long time, the Parliament chose the president. Then, the people would vote to approve that person. In 2011, a revolution happened in Egypt. This led to the first free and fair elections in 2012. Mohamed Morsi won that election.

However, after many people became unhappy with his government, a coup happened in 2013. General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took over and later became the president.

People in Egypt can join many different political parties. There are more than 100 registered parties in the country. Some large ones include the Free Egyptians Party and the New Wafd Party. However, the law says parties cannot be based on religion, race, or gender. This rule is meant to keep the country stable and united.

The government also uses special laws to keep order. Since 1981, emergency laws have been used many times. These laws can limit things like street protests or certain meetings. In 2015, a new law was made to fight terrorism. This law gives the president power to order curfews in some areas.

Egypt is a very important leader in the Middle East. The headquarters for the Arab League is located in the city of Cairo. The Arab League is a group of many Arab nations. Egypt often acts as a mediator to help these countries solve their problems.

Egypt was also the first Arab nation to make peace with Israel. This happened after the Camp David Accords. Even though there are some disagreements with neighbors like Sudan, Egypt remains a key player in world politics. It helps many different groups talk and work together.
