Turkey is a constitutional republic with a presidential system. This system uses a separation of powers to run the country. One part is the executive branch, which is led by the President. The President acts as both the head of state and the head of government. This person also serves as the commander-in-chief of the military. Another part is the legislative branch, which is the Grand National Assembly. This group of people makes the laws for the nation.

The government is divided into three main branches. The legislative branch has 600 seats in the Grand National Assembly. Members represent 81 different provinces. They are elected to serve for five-year terms. To win a seat, a political party must get at least 7% of the national vote. The executive branch carries out the laws through the Council of Ministers. The President can also veto bills before they become law.

The third branch is the judicial system, which includes the courts. These courts are independent from the other branches of power. No person or institution can interfere with how the courts work. Turkey does not use a jury system to decide cases. Instead, judges look at evidence from lawyers and prosecutors to find the facts. There are four supreme courts, including the Constitutional Court. This court reviews human rights and constitutional rules.

Turkey's political rules have changed many times over the years. The current constitution was adopted on 7 November 1982. In 2017, major changes were made through a referendum. These changes moved the country from a parliamentary system to a presidential one. This change removed the position of Prime Minister. Now, the President holds more power over the government.

Every Turkish citizen can vote once they turn 18. Both men and women have had this right since 1934. People vote for many roles, including the President and local mayors. In May 2023, President Erdoğan won a new election. Political parties use donations and money from the Treasury to work. They must follow strict rules about where their money comes from. This helps keep the political system organized and clear.
