The city is by the Euphrates River. Long ago, the river split into a canal here. This may be how the city got its name. Some say the name means a canal regulator.

Fallujah is known as the "city of mosques." There are more than 200 mosques in the city and nearby villages. Many people live there now. In 1947, only 10,000 people lived in the town. By 2018, the population was about 250,900 people.

The city has seen much fighting. This happened during the Iraq War. Heavy battles left many buildings and streets damaged.
