In the past, the area was once called Tikirwan in the Berber language.

History tells us the city was founded around the year 670. An Arab general named Uqba ibn Nafi chose this spot. At that time, the land was a thick forest. It was full of reptiles and wild beasts. The site was chosen to be a military post. It was located far from the sea to stay safe. This helped protect the area from attacks.

Kairouan became a very wealthy and powerful place. A group called the Aghlabids ruled from the year 800 to 909. They made the city their capital and built many fine things. They built large palaces, strong walls, and beautiful gardens. They also built waterworks to help the city. The Aghlabid Basins are large pools that still remain today.
