Kairouan is a historic city located in Tunisia. It serves as the capital of the Kairouan Governorate. The city is situated south of the coastal cities of Tunis, Sousse, and Monastir. Kairouan is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also considered a holy place for Muslims. The name Kairouan likely comes from the Arabic word al-Qayrawān. This word can mean a "military group" or a "caravan."
The city was founded around the year 670. An Arab general named Uqba ibn Nafi chose the site. He selected a location in the middle of a dense forest. At that time, the area was full of wild beasts and reptiles. The site was built where the city of Kamounia once stood. The location was far from the sea. This helped protect the military post from attacks by the Berbers. The Berbers resisted the Arab invasion for many years. Leaders like Kusaila and the woman Al-Kahina led these resistances. Eventually, many Berbers converted to Islam. This changed the social and religious landscape of the region.
In the year 742, Kairouan faced a massive military threat. A large Berber army led by Abd al-Wahid ibn Yazid approached the city. This army was said to have 300,000 people. This was perhaps the largest Berber army ever seen. The governor Handhala ibn Safwan arrived in Kairouan to defend it. He first defeated a leader named Oqasha ibn Ayub al-Fezari at El-Qarn. Then, Handhala gathered the entire population of Kairouan to fight. In May 742, a bloody battle occurred at al-Asnam. This battle was only three miles outside of Kairouan. Between 120,000 and 180,000 Berbers fell in this single encounter.
A period of great wealth followed under the Aghlabid dynasty. Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab founded this dynasty in 800. The Caliph Harun ar-Rashid confirmed his rule in Baghdad. The Aghlabids made Kairouan their capital city. The city became famous for its prosperity and its luxuriant gardens. It also had many olive groves.

By the 12th century, the famous traveler Al-Idrisi described the city. He noted that Kairouan was once the greatest and wealthiest city in the West. He described it as having the most profitable trade and highest tax revenues. He also mentioned its fine buildings and its many scholars. However, he saw that much of it had become ruins. He noted that the water supply was scarce. People had to drink from a great cistern called a majel. This cistern was a square architectural marvel with a central tower. The city also once included a royal residence called Sabra. Sabra was known for having three hundred baths, but it eventually fell into complete ruin.
In modern times, Kairouan has seen various changes. The city was taken by the French in 1881. The French built a railway connecting Sousse and Kairouan. In 1988, the historic monuments were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city remains a center of life with about 187,000 inhabitants as of 2014.
