He ruled Egypt from 284 to 246 BC. His father was Ptolemy I, a general for Alexander the Great. His mother was Queen Berenice I from Macedon. Ptolemy II was born on the island of Kos in 309 or 308 BC. During his reign, the court in Alexandria became very rich and famous. He helped the Museum and the Library of Alexandria grow.

Life in the royal court was full of learning and art. Ptolemy II was educated by very smart teachers. These included Philitas of Cos and Strato of Lampsacus. He was also a king who managed many family struggles. He had many half-siblings, including Magas of Cyrene. There was also a fight for power with his brother, Ptolemy Keraunos. This conflict led to many changes in the royal family. Eventually, Ptolemy II married his sister, Arsinoe II.

This marriage was normal for Egyptian pharaohs. However, it shocked the Greeks who lived there. The pair was called "Philadelphoi," which means "sibling-lovers."

To grow his empire, Ptolemy II fought several wars. He wanted to control more land in the Aegean and Levant. From 275 to 271 BC, he fought the First Syrian War. This war was against the rival Seleucid Empire. He gained some land in places like Cilicia and Caria. However, he lost control of Cyrenaica after his half-brother Magas left. Later, he fought the Second Syrian War from 260 to 253 BC.

This war caused him to lose many of his earlier gains. He also fought the Chremonidean War against Antigonid Macedonia. These wars were hard jobs that shaped his kingdom.

Ptolemy II also expanded his reach toward the south and east. He fought the kingdom of Nubia around 275 BC. This helped Egypt take control of the Dodekaschoinos area.

This land had rich gold mines at Wadi Allaqi. He even built a new city there called Berenice Panchrysus. He also worked to connect the Nile to the Red Sea. He cleared an old canal that had filled with sand. This allowed ships to travel more easily. He built many new ports along the coast for trade. These ports helped Egypt trade with far-off places.

His work left a lasting mark on the ancient world. The ports he built became important centers for many years. For example, Berenice and Myos Hormos became key spots for trade. These paths helped move goods from the Indian Ocean. His empire was a very strong land during his time. He ruled for nearly forty years until his death in 246 BC.

Even after he was gone, his family continued to rule. His son, Ptolemy III, would one day be a king too. The history of his reign shows how much one leader can change a land.
