The Syrian Wars were a series of six major conflicts. They took place during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Two large groups fought each other during this time. One group was the Seleucid Empire. The other group was the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Both groups were formed after the death of Alexander the Great. They fought over a region called Coele-Syria. This area includes parts of modern Israel and Palestine.

Control of this specific land was very important. It served as a path between Asia and Egypt. This path helped people trade many different goods. The land also produced a lot of food for people to eat. Having this area meant more money from trade and farming. Because it was so valuable, both sides wanted to own it. This constant struggle led to many years of fighting.

The wars began after the leaders of the first era died. In the first war from 274 to 271 BC, Ptolemy II fought Antiochus I. Ptolemy II was a very skilled general. He won many battles and took back coastal lands. Later, the second war happened between 260 and 253 BC. Antiochus II fought against Ptolemy II during this time. Some of the details from this war are lost to history. The fighting finally ended when Antiochus married a daughter of Ptolemy.

Many different kings took part in the later wars. Antiochus III the Great fought the fourth war in 219 BC. He wanted to win back lands for his empire. During this time, Ptolemy IV used a new kind of army. He trained thirty thousand native Egyptians to fight as soldiers. This helped him win a huge battle at Raphia in 217 BC. The fifth war happened around 202 BC. Antiochus III won a big victory at the Battle of Panium.

These long wars had a very big impact on the world. Both empires used up too much of their money. They also lost many of their people in battle. This made both groups much weaker than they were before. Because they were weak, they could not defend themselves. Eventually, two new powers arrived to take the land. These groups were Rome and Parthia. They conquered the lands that the two empires once ruled.
