The Diadochi were the leaders who fought for control after Alexander the Great died. Alexander was a king from Macedon who built a huge empire. His lands reached from Greece all the way to the Indus River Valley.

When he died in 323 BC, there was no clear successor to take his place. This led to many years of fighting and change. These wars marked the start of the Hellenistic period. This was a time when Greek culture spread to many new places.

The word Diadochi comes from a Greek word meaning "to receive." These men were generals and friends of Alexander. They were often part of his special cavalry called the hetairoi.

These soldiers were often from noble families. They were used to being given important jobs by Alexander. When Alexander died, they suddenly had no leader to tell them what to do. They had to decide for themselves how to rule. This created a lot of struggle among the different groups.

Before Alexander, his father Philip II built a strong military state. Philip was a king of Macedon who fought many battles. Alexander was raised by famous philosophers to be a great leader.

Alexander even tamed a wild horse named Bucephalus when he was young. He eventually took the throne in 336 BC after Philip was assassinated. Alexander then led his army to conquer many different lands. His presence on the battlefield helped him win many victories.

After Alexander died, the leaders met in a place called Babylon. They tried to divide the empire into different parts.

Perdiccas was named the Regent to help lead the empire. He was given the job of looking after the royal family. Other leaders were given specific areas to rule as satraps. For example, Ptolemy was given control over Egypt. Antigonus received parts of Asia-Minor. Other men like Lysimachus and Seleucus received different lands. This division helped turn one big empire into several smaller kingdoms.

These new kingdoms lasted for many centuries. The leaders formed dynasties, which are families that rule for a long time. One famous leader was Seleucus I Nicator.

He was one of the last original Diadochi to rule. His dynasty helped keep Greek influence alive in Persia. The way these leaders divided the world changed history forever. It connected many different cultures through trade and ideas. This era helped shape the ancient world we study today.
