Adad-nirari II was a very important leader in the ancient world. He was the first king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. His name meant "Adad (the storm god) is my help." He ruled for twenty years from 911 BCE to 891 BCE.

This king helped his people grow very strong. He started a new time of expansion for his land. This followed a period when the empire was not growing as much. His reign helped bring back wealth to the Middle East region.

To grow his empire, the king had to win many battles. He first had to deal with people who were not following his rules. These people were in places called Anatolia, the Levant, and Iran. In 910 BCE, he fought a battle near the Khabur and Euphrates rivers. He won this fight against the Aramean people.

He also moved into eastern Anatolia. There, he won control over the Neo-Hittite and Hurrian groups. These steps made his kingdom much larger than before.

Adad-nirari II also fought leaders in the land of Babylonia. He defeated a leader named Shamash-mudammiq twice. Because of these wins, he took land north of the Diyala River. He also took the towns of Hīt and Zanqu. Later, he fought another leader named Nabu-shuma-ukin I. He also went west to take Aramean cities. These cities were named Kadmuh and Nisibin. These wins brought huge amounts of treasure back to Assyria.

His many wins helped trade grow between many different places. New trade paths opened up for the Phoenicians and Arameans. These paths linked Anatolia to Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. This helped the whole Middle East become prosperous again. His son, Tukulti-Ninurta II, became king after him. The son also worked to grow the empire through war. He continued the work his father had started.

Historians use his reign to understand the past very well. We have lists of names from his time. These lists help us know the exact year he began ruling. We can date his first year to 911 BCE.
