Eannatum is famous because he built one of the first big empires. This means he brought many different lands under his control. He was the son of Akurgal and the grandson of Ur-Nanshe. His Sumerian name was Eannatum, but he had another name. His Amorite name was Lumma.

Eannatum used his army to grow his lands. He fought a long war with the city of Umma. This war was about a rich area of land called Gu-Edin.

Eannatum led his soldiers himself during these battles. He defeated the ruler of Umma, a man named Ush. Later, Eannatum made a treaty with the new ruler, Enakalle. This was a formal agreement between the two places. Because of this treaty, Umma had to pay grain to the gods. They paid grain to the goddess Nina and the god Ingurisa.

His empire grew even larger than Sumer.

Eannatum conquered parts of a land called Elam. He also took the city of Az near the Persian Gulf. He even claimed the title of King of Kish. Some records say he won victories as far away as Mari. He demanded tribute from these distant places. However, it was hard to keep such a large empire. Many parts of his land tried to revolt against him.

Eannatum was also a very busy builder. He worked hard to improve his home in Lagash. He built many new temples and grand palaces.

He also helped rebuild the city of Nina. Workers dug many canals and reservoirs in that city. These helped move water to the land. He wanted his cities to be strong and well-made.

We know about Eannatum because of ancient stone carvings. One very famous object is the Stele of the Vultures.
