This area is in the country we now call Iraq. For a long time, many different groups lived there. Some people spoke Sumerian. Others spoke Akkadian. These two groups shared many ideas.

At first, Babylon was just a small town. A group of people called the Amorites moved into the area. They ruled small kingdoms. One leader named Sumu-abum took the land of Babylon. He did not even call himself a king. He thought Babylon was too small for that.

Everything changed with a leader named Hammurabi. He ruled from 1792 to 1750 BC.

Hammurabi made Babylon a great city. He built many things. He also made a famous set of laws. This is called the Code of Hammurabi. These laws helped keep order. He made Babylon a holy city for religion. He made the god Marduk the most important god.

After Hammurabi died, the empire fell apart. It became a small kingdom again. But Babylon stayed a very important place for many years.
