This location made it a very important place for many years. It served as the capital for the Elam people. Later, it became the winter capital for the Achaemenid Empire. It also remained a key center during the Parthian and Sasanian periods.

Archaeologists have worked at Susa for a very long time to find its secrets.

In 1836, Henry Rawlinson began examining the site. Later, William Loftus identified the area as Susa in 1851. He even found a jar containing about 110 old coins. In 1885, a French team led by the Dieulafoys began digging. They found beautiful glazed bricks and parts of a palace. Most work at the site was later organized by the French government. Many of these treasures were sent to the Louvre museum in France.

Many famous stories and books mention this ancient city. Susa appears in the very earliest Sumerian records. It is also found in the Hebrew Bible under the name Shushan.

In the Book of Esther, a woman named Esther became queen there. She lived with King Ahasuerus and saved her people. The Greek play "The Persians" also uses Susa as a setting. These stories show how much people throughout history have known about this place.

Scientists use carbon-14 dating to show people lived there as early as 4200 BC. During the Susa I period, people built a huge platform. This platform rose high above the flat land around it. They also made beautiful painted pottery.

Most of these vessels were found in graves near the temple. They included drinking cups, serving dishes, and small jars. These items show the great skill of the people who lived there.

Life in Susa changed as different cultures moved through the area. During the Susa II period, the city was influenced by the Uruk culture. This influence included new ways of writing and building.
