It sits near the border of Iraq and the Persian Gulf. The capital city of this province is Ahvaz. This land is a very important part of Iran today. It holds the largest oil field in the whole country. Because of this, the province is very strategic for the nation. People also grow a lot of sugarcane in the fields here. You can see these fields near the Dez River in Dezful.

This province has a history that goes back thousands of years. Long ago, it was part of a place called ancient Elam. The Elamites were the founders of the first Iranian empire. They built amazing structures like the ziggurat at Choqa Zanbil.

Many different groups have lived in and ruled Khuzestan over time. During the Sassanid era, the region became very wealthy and bright. They even built a famous medical school called Gundishapur. This school brought in smart doctors from Rome and Egypt. Later, the area came under Muslim rule starting around 639 AD. For a long time, the southern part was called Arabistan. In 1925, the entire province regained its old name, Khuzestan.
