geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yasuj is an important city in southwestern Iran. It sits high up in the Zagros Mountains. The city serves as the capital for its province and its county. It is also the capital of its district. This city is known for its industry. One example is a plant that processes sugar.

The weather in Yasuj is quite special. It has a climate influenced by the Mediterranean. Winds from the Persian Gulf bring lots of rain to the area. This makes Yasuj the wettest city in Iran south of the Alborz Mountains. It gets nine times more rain than Isfahan. It also gets twice as much as Kermanshah. This heavy rain helps small glaciers form on the highest Zagros peaks.

History has been part of this land for a very long time. People lived in the Yasuj area as early as the Bronze Age. There are many old sites to find here. These include the Martyrs Hills and the Khosravi Hill. In 331 BC, Alexander III of Macedon led his forces through here. They stormed the Persian Gates to enter the heartland of Persia. Today, you can see old treasures at the Yasuj Museum. It holds bronze vessels, pottery, and statues.

Many people call Yasuj their home. The city has grown much larger over the years. In 1976, only 4,524 people lived there. By 2016, the city had 134,532 people. The Central District has over 250,000 people in total. This area includes the city and some nearby villages. In 2023, several villages merged with the city of Yasuj.

Work in Yasuj involves many different skills. Local people make things like baskets and rugs. They also make bricks and mosaic tiles. Some people make feed for livestock. The economy is also growing with new industry. A large refinery was planned to cost $2.2 billion. This refinery will produce many things like petrol and gasoil. The city also has schools like Yasuj University.
