Yasuj

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yasuj is a significant industrial city located in southwestern Iran. It sits within the Zagros Mountains. The city serves as the capital for the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. It is also the capital of Boyer-Ahmad County and the Central District. The name Yasuj is often used to describe the entire surrounding region. This area functions as a major hub for local government and industry.

The climate in Yasuj is a continental-influenced Mediterranean climate. This is known scientifically as Köppen Csa. The city receives a large amount of precipitation. This happens because it sits in the direct path of rain-bearing winds. These winds travel from the Persian Gulf toward the mountains. Because of this, Yasuj is the wettest city in Iran south of the Alborz Mountains. Its annual rainfall is nine times greater than the rainfall in Isfahan. It is also twice as high as the rainfall in Kermanshah.

This heavy precipitation creates unique features in the local landscape. The high rainfall allows small glaciers to exist on the highest Zagros peaks. This is different from the Kuhrud Mountains to the east. Those mountains are the same height as the Zagros. However, the Kuhrud Mountains have no glaciers due to aridity. Aridity refers to a lack of moisture in the air or soil. In Yasuj, the wet season lasts into October. This differs from many other Mediterranean climates that have shorter wet seasons. The long dry season typically occurs between June and September.

The history of the Yasuj area reaches back to the Bronze Age. Many archaeological sites exist in the surrounding land. These include the Martyrs Hills, which date to the 3rd millennium BC. The Khosravi Hill is another site from the Achaemenian period. Other important locations include the ancient site of Gerd and the Pataveh bridge. The Pay-e Chol cemetery is also a notable historical find. The Yasuj Museum opened in 2002 to preserve these discoveries. It displays bronze vessels, pottery, statues, and coins.

Famous historical events took place near this region. In 331 BC, Alexander III of Macedon led his forces here. His Macedonian troops stormed the Persian Gates, also known as Darvazeh-ye Fars. This action allowed them to find a way into the Persian heartland. This event is a major part of the local historical record.

The population of Yasuj has grown significantly over recent decades. In 1976, the city had only 4,524 residents. By 2006, the census recorded 96,786 people in 20,297 households. The 2011 census counted 108,505 people living in 26,304 households. By 2016, the population reached 134,532 people in 34,850 households. The Central District population was just over 250,000 in 2016. In 2023, the city expanded through several mergers. The city of Madavan and several villages joined the city limits. These included Balahzar, Mehrian, and Tall Khosrow.

The economy relies on several local industries and activities. People produce baskets, carpets, and rugs in the area. Other local products include mosaic tiles, bricks, and livestock feed. Yasuj is also an industrial city with a sugar processing plant. A large refinery was planned by the private sector. This project was estimated to cost $2.2 billion. The refinery is designed to produce petrol, gasoil, and kerosene. It will also produce furnace oil, liquefied gas, asphalt, and sulfur.

Education is a key part of the city's infrastructure. There are several higher learning institutions located here. These include Yasuj University and Yasuj Azad University. The city is also home to the Yasuj University of Medical Sciences. These institutions help support the growing population and the local economy.
