Ilam, Iran

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ilam is a busy city in western Iran. It serves as the capital for its province, its county, and its district. To the east of the city, the Kabir Kuh mountain range rises up. Iraq sits just to the west of this area.

The city is part of a cold, mountainous region. It sits at a high place above the level of the sea. This location makes the city a very important center for the area.

The weather in Ilam changes a lot throughout the year. It has a Mediterranean climate, but it also has influences from the land nearby. Deserts to the south and west affect the air.

In the winter, you might see heavy showers or snow. The summer is a different story. It becomes very hot, dry, and dusty. On some days in August, the heat can be very high. On cold days in February, the temperature drops quite low.

Many people call Ilam their home. The population has grown steadily over the years. In 2006, there were 155,289 people living in the city. By 2011, that number grew to 172,213 people.

The 2016 census counted 194,030 people in the rural district. Most people live in many different types of households. This growing population has changed how the city looks and works.

Old buildings in Ilam show how people lived in the past. Many of these structures are made of brick. A common style is the courtyard dwelling. This is a building with an open space inside.

The Governor Castle is a great example of this style. It uses a pond and tall trees to stay cool. These trees add shade and moisture to the air. The Falahaty Mansion even uses a pitched roof instead of a flat one.

Today, Ilam is a place for learning and work. It is home to several large universities. You can study at the University of Ilam or the Ilam University of Medical Sciences.

Other schools include the Islamic Azad University of Ilam. There are also campuses for the Safir Danesh Farhangian university. These schools help many people in the region learn new things. This makes the city a lively place for students.
