Ilam, Iran

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ilam is a city in western Iran. It is the capital of its province. To the east, you will see the Kabir Kuh mountains. Iraq is just to the west of the city. Ilam sits in a cold mountain area. But deserts to the west and south affect the weather. This makes the weather change a lot each year. Winter brings heavy rain or snow. Summer is very hot, dry, and dusty.

Many people live in Ilam. In 2011, the city had 172,213 people. The city has many schools and universities. You can find many old buildings there. Most were made of brick. Many used a courtyard style. A courtyard is an open space inside a building. These yards help keep buildings cool. For example, the Governor Castle has a pond and tall trees. This adds shade and moisture to the air. The Falahaty Mansion has a pitched roof. Other buildings have flat roofs. These old styles help people stay comfortable in the heat.
