Nabonidus was the final king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. He ruled from 556 BC until 539 BC.

His reign was a major turning point in history. He was the last native ruler of ancient Mesopotamia. This region had seen thousands of years of Sumero-Akkadian states and kingdoms. His fall marked the end of many ancient empires. He was also the last king to rule Babylon independently.

Scholars describe Nabonidus as a very individualistic and unique ruler. Some historians call him the first archaeologist in history. This is because he showed a deep interest in studying the past. He was also known as a religious reformer. He sought to change the traditional religious structure of his empire.

He worked to increase the status of the moon god, Sîn. At the same time, he decreased the status of Marduk. Marduk was the traditional national deity of Babylon.

His exact family origins remain a mystery to historians. Nabonidus never made any genealogical claims to previous kings. This suggests he was not part of the Chaldean dynasty. His father was named Nabu-balatsu-iqbi. Nabonidus described him as a wise and heroic prince.

His mother was Adad-guppi, who was born around 648 BC. She was a very influential woman at the Babylonian royal court. Some believe she had Assyrian or Aramean ancestry. She served as a worshipper of the moon god, Sîn.

There are several theories about how Nabonidus rose to power. One theory suggests he was connected to the Chaldean kings through marriage. He may have married a daughter of the great king Nebuchadnezzar II. This could explain why his son, Belshazzar, was seen as a descendant of Nebuchadnezzar II.

Another possibility is that his mother's influence helped him reach the throne. He was proclaimed king after the death of Labashi-Marduk in 556 BC. This event likely involved a plot led by his son, Belshazzar.

Nabonidus's reign included a period of self-imposed exile. From 552 BC to 543 BC, he lived in Tayma, Arabia.

The reason for this move is not recorded in history. It may have been due to arguments with the Babylonian clergy. During this time, Belshazzar acted as a regent in Babylonia. This means Belshazzar ruled on behalf of his father. Even while in Arabia, Nabonidus was still recognized as the king.

When Nabonidus returned to Babylon in 543 BC, he focused on religious building. He rebuilt the Eḫulḫul, which was a temple for Sîn in Harran.

He also performed restoration work on other ancient temples. For example, he worked on the temple of Shamash at Larsa.

These actions show his deep devotion to the moon god and his desire to revive old traditions.

His rule ended abruptly due to the rise of the Achaemenian Empire. Cyrus the Great led the Persian forces against Babylon.

The Persians won a decisive battle at the city of Opis. Following this victory, the Persians entered Babylon without a fight in 539 BC. Some historical sources say Nabonidus was captured during this time. However, they also suggest he was spared. He may have lived in exile in the region of Carmania for many years.
