The Second Temple period was a very important time in Jewish history. It lasted for about 600 years, from 516 BCE to 70 CE. During these years, the Second Temple stood in the city of Jerusalem. This era began when Jewish people returned to their homeland. It ended after a large war with the Roman Empire.

This period started after a time of great loss. Long ago, the Neo-Babylonian Empire conquered the Kingdom of Judah. They destroyed the First Temple and took many people away to Babylon. Later, the Persian Empire conquered the Babylonians. The Persian king, Cyrus the Great, issued a special decree. This allowed the exiled people to return to Zion. They began rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem between 521 and 516 BCE.

Many different empires ruled the land over the centuries. In 332 BCE, Alexander the Great conquered the region. This brought Greek culture, known as Hellenism, to the area. Later, the Seleucid Empire took control. A leader named Antiochus IV made rules that were hard for Jewish people to follow. He forbade many traditional practices. This led to the Maccabean Revolt. Because of this fight, the Hasmonean dynasty ruled a Jewish kingdom from 140 to 37 BCE.

After the Hasmonean kingdom, the Romans arrived. In 63 BCE, the Roman Republic conquered the land. In 37 BCE, the Romans made Herod the Great the king of Judea. By 6 CE, the land became a Roman province. Life became very difficult under Roman rule. This caused deep anger and many disturbances. These tensions led to the First Jewish-Roman War from 66 to 73 CE.

In 70 CE, the Roman army besieged Jerusalem. They destroyed the city and the Second Temple. This was a very sad and huge event. However, Jewish culture found new ways to survive. People began to focus more on the synagogue and studying the Torah. New groups like the Pharisees and the Essenes also emerged. These changes helped shape the religion for many years to come.
