How the menorah worked is described in the Hebrew Bible.

The Book of Exodus says it was made from pure gold. It was not a simple candle holder. Instead, it used fresh olive oil to create light. The design included a base and a central shaft. Six branches grew from the sides, with three on each side. These branches had decorations that looked like almond flowers, buds, and blossoms. Some ancient scholars thought the arms were round. Others believed the branches were straight.

The history of the menorah spans many centuries. The Bible says God showed the design to Moses on a mountain. The first menorah was used in the Tabernacle. Later, King Solomon had ten lampstands in his Temple.

These were taken by the Babylonians long ago. During the Second Temple period, the Hasmonean kings used menorahs too. Some records say they even used wood or silver before they had gold. The menorah has moved through many different lands over time.

Many famous events and places are linked to the menorah. In the year 70 CE, Roman soldiers took the menorah from Jerusalem.

You can see this event carved on the Arch of Titus in Rome. Some stories say the Vandals took it to Carthage in 455. Later, a Byzantine army reportedly brought it to Constantinople. There are many different theories about where it went after that. No one has found clear evidence of its location since ancient times.

Today, the menorah remains a powerful part of culture. You might see a nine-branched version used during the festival of Hanukkah.
