The name comes from a Hebrew word meaning "to dedicate." This name honors the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. It is a special time for many people around the world. The holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. It is unique because it starts in one month and ends in another.

To celebrate, people light a nine-branched lamp called a Hanukkah menorah.

This lamp has eight spaces for ceremonial lights. It also has one extra candle called a shamash. The shamash acts as a helper to light the others. On the first night, you light only one candle. You add one more candle every night until all eight are burning.

A group called the Maccabees fought the Seleucid Empire. They fought to win back Jerusalem and the Second Temple. A famous story from the Talmud tells of a miracle involving oil. The Maccabees found only enough oil to light the Temple lamp for one day. However, the oil miraculously lasted for eight full days.

People often eat fried foods and dairy products. Common foods include latkes and sufganiyot. Some people also play a game with a spinning top called a dreidel. Since the 1970s, the Chabad movement has organized large public lightings. These public menorahs can be seen in many places around the world.

Hanukkah has great cultural importance today. In the Western world, it often falls during the holiday season. This can lead to the practice of giving gifts.
