Shemini Atzeret is a special Jewish holiday.

The name means "Eighth Day of Assembly." It happens on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. This usually falls in late September or early October. The holiday follows the seven-day festival of Sukkot. Because it comes right after, it is like an extra day of gathering.

It is both a separate holiday and a part of Sukkot. Some people call it a "closing festival." This is because it marks the end of a long season of holy days.

This holiday works in a very interesting way. Many people see it as a time to pause. The Hebrew word for assembly, "atzeret," also means to stop or tarry. It is like a day to stay a little longer. A famous teacher named Rashi told a story about this. He said it is like a king who asks his sons to stay one more day. The king does not want them to leave just yet. This holiday is a way to spend more time with God.

The history of this day goes back a very long time. The Torah mentions Shemini Atzeret in several places. It is part of the "Priestly Code" in the Bible. Long ago, the holiday was linked to service in the Temple. Today, the way people celebrate has changed over many centuries. One big part of the holiday is Simchat Torah. This is a later tradition made by rabbis. In the Land of Israel, people often combine the two holidays into one day. Outside of Israel, the celebrations are often split into two days.

There are many specific details about how this day is kept. In the Land of Israel, the holiday is one day long. In other places, like the Diaspora, it is often two days. Many groups, such as Karaite Jews and Samaritans, also observe this day. However, they might celebrate it on a different day due to their calendars. They do not follow the tradition of Simchat Torah. On the holiday, people say a special blessing called Shehecheyanu. This is a prayer used on the first night of major holidays.

Shemini Atzeret links many different ideas together. It concludes a long process that starts with Rosh Hashanah. This process includes the Ten Days of Repentance and Yom Kippur. While those days are about thinking and asking for forgiveness, Shemini Atzeret is about joy. It is a time for open celebration and festive meals. People often dance while holding Torah scrolls during special processions called hakafot. This turns the serious time of the year into a time of happiness. It is a way to celebrate a special bond with faith.
