People use these labels to describe their own attitudes toward religion. This helps them show how they live their lives.

In Western countries, these groups are often split by how they follow tradition. Orthodox Judaism is a very traditional movement.

Conservative Judaism began in 19th century Europe. Later, Reconstructionist and Jewish Renewal movements grew in the United States.

History shows that these divisions have existed for a very long time. Before the year 70 CE, there were many groups in Judaea. These included the Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and Zealots.

The Pharisees eventually became the basis for Rabbinic Judaism. This is the main group most people know today. Other groups, like the Sadducees, eventually disappeared from history. Some people also followed a path called Jewish Christianity. This group eventually became a separate religion called Christianity.

Some groups are also defined by where their ancestors lived. Ashkenazi Jews make up about 75% of the world's Jewish population.

The Samaritans have their own version of the Torah. Today, there are only about 840 Samaritans left in the world. They live in places like Holon and near Mount Gerizim. Even though they are a separate group, they are still a very important part of the story of the region.
