Haredi Judaism is a specific group within Orthodox Judaism.

Members follow Jewish laws and traditions very strictly. They believe these religious rules are binding and cannot be changed. Many Haredim see themselves as the true keepers of these ancient ways. They often disagree with other modern Jewish groups. They may view other movements as moving away from God's laws. This commitment to tradition defines their entire way of life.

How Haredim live often involves staying close to their own communities. This helps them focus on their faith and avoid outside influences. Some Haredi groups choose to live separately from the rest of society. However, some communities encourage young people to start businesses or earn degrees. Other groups, such as Chabad-Lubavitch, focus on reaching out to other Jews.

This mix of separation and outreach shows the different ways they practice their faith. They work hard to maintain their unique way of life.

The name "Haredi" comes from a Hebrew word meaning "to tremble."

This refers to an awe-inspired fear of God. It shows they want to follow His will perfectly. Many people outside the group use the term "ultra-Orthodox." Many Haredim do not like this name because it can sound negative. They feel it suggests they are extremists. Instead, they may prefer terms like "strictly Orthodox" or "traditional Orthodox."

In 2020, there were about 2.1 million Haredim globally. This group makes up 14% of the world's Jewish population. Most Haredim live in Israel or North America. Many also live in Western Europe, especially in London and Antwerp. Some people also join the community later in life. This is known as the baal teshuva movement. This movement has helped the population grow since the 1970s.

The Haredi population is growing at a very fast rate.

This growth happens because they often have large families. They also have high rates of people staying in the faith. Experts say the population could double every 20 years. In Israel, the number of Haredim is rising quickly. By the end of 2025, they may number over 1.4 million people there. This makes them a very important part of the community's future.
