Judas Maccabeus was a Jewish priest and a famous leader.

He lived a long time ago in a place called Judea. His father, Mattathias, was a priest from the village of Modi'in. In 167 BCE, Mattathias and his sons started a revolt. They fought against the Seleucid Empire and its ruler, Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This ruler had made laws that stopped Jewish religious practices. After Mattathias died in 166 BCE, Judah took over as the leader. Many people believe he was a natural choice for commander because of his talent.

Judah earned a special name during the early days of the rebellion. People called him Maccabee. Some think this name comes from a word for a hammer. This might be because he was very fierce in battle. Other stories say the name is a special Hebrew acronym. It comes from a verse that asks who is like God. This phrase was used as a battle cry to help his troops.

Judah used a smart way to fight much larger armies. He used a method called guerrilla warfare. This meant he avoided the big regular armies of the Seleucids. Instead, he used quick strikes to keep the enemy feeling unsafe. He won a victory at Nahal el-Haramiah against a leader named Apollonius. After that, more people joined his cause. He also won a big battle at Emmaus. He did this by marching through the night to surprise the enemy.

These victories helped Judah change things in Jerusalem. He drove the enemy forces out of the city. He also cleaned the holy Temple of Jerusalem. He removed statues of Greek gods and goddesses from the building. On December 14, 164 BCE, he restored the religious services. This special event is why people celebrate Hanukkah today. It is a holiday that commemorates the dedication of the Temple.

Judah continued to fight for many years after his wins. He helped Jewish communities in Galilee and Transjordan. He even made a treaty with the Roman Republic in 161 BCE. This was the first contract between the Jewish people and the Romans. However, the war was very hard and continued for a long time. In 160 BCE, Judah died during the Battle of Elasa. His brothers took his body back to his home in Modiin. Even after he died, his brothers kept fighting for freedom.
