He lived during a time of great change in the Roman Empire. Josephus was born in Jerusalem, which was part of a Roman province called Judea. His family was quite wealthy and powerful. His father, Matthias, was a Jewish priest. His mother came from a royal family known as the Hasmoneans. Because of his family, he grew up with a very high status in his community. He was educated alongside his brother in the city of Jerusalem.

Life became very difficult when a large war broke out.

This was the First Jewish-Roman War, which lasted from AD 66 to AD 70. Josephus was chosen to be a military leader in a place called Galilee. He trained 65,000 troops to defend the land. He worked hard to build walls around many towns. These towns included Tiberias, Japha, and Tarichaea. He also had to compete with another leader named John of Gischala for control. Eventually, the Roman army arrived to fight the Jewish forces.

One of the hardest moments happened during the siege of Yodfat.

The Roman army attacked the city for six weeks. Josephus and 40 of his friends were trapped in a cave. They did not want to be captured by the Romans. Josephus said they drew lots to decide who would die so others could live. He was one of only two men left alive to surrender. After this, he became a prisoner of the Roman leader, Vespasian. Josephus told Vespasian that he would soon become the Roman emperor. This prediction came true in AD 69.

Because his prediction was right, Vespasian changed Josephus's life.

Vespasian gave Josephus his freedom and Roman citizenship. Josephus even took the name Flavius from the emperor's family. He became a close advisor to Vespasian's son, Titus. He even helped as a translator during the siege of Jerusalem in AD 70. During this time, the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. Josephus spent much of his later life in Rome. He married several times and had several sons, including Flavius Hyrcanus.

Josephus is famous today because of the books he wrote.

His most important works are called The Jewish War and Antiquities of the Jews. These books tell us how people lived in the first century. They describe Jewish customs, like hanging linen curtains at house entrances. His writing is a main source for learning about many famous people. This includes John the Baptist, Herod the Great, and Jesus of Nazareth. Historians use his words to understand the history of ancient Israel. Even though some people disagree with him, his work is still very special.
